NYC '19

Last week, I spent four days in New York City on a school trip with some friends and attended a journalism convention at Columbia.

Shortly after we arrived, we visited Freedom Tower (or One World Trade Center) to see an amazing view of the city. It’s the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

Then we went to the 9/11 memorial and went through the museum. It was my second time visiting the Ground Zero, but it was still just as impactful as the first time. I was almost year old when 9/11 happened so it really made the event much more real to me.

The next morning we woke early and went off to classes. The classes are always interesting because we learn from professionals plus we get to see Columbia’s classrooms!

Once we finished with classes, we walked around and admired the city.

Then we saw the broadway musical, Kiss Me Kate. Think 10 Things I Hate About You, which is really based off of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shew, plus actors trying to make it in show business. One of the stars is Corbin Bleu, who was in High School Musical as “Chad.” The show was amazing and hilarious. Definitely suggest checking out the soundtrack. And after waiting in the rain, we met Corbin Bleu!

Friday morning we rose early again to the subway to take the 1 to Columbia. But, before we went to class we stopped by the best bagel shop in the world: Absolute Bagels. I got a classic plain bagel with cream cheese and it was divine. Highly recommend.

My favorite class of the day was “Structure of Poetry.” It was nothing like I thought it would be. I assumed it would be how to structure your poetry writing. However, this was not the case. We literally spent the class learning how to structure the lines of our poetry into a figure of some sort. It was all very abstract.

That night we saw Come From Away. Beyond amazing. When it first started, I didn’t feel like I was watching a broadway musical because the actors were dressed in jeans. Oh but these actors played two or more characters while on stage. I was so so impressed.

If you don’t know what Come From Away is, it is a story on a whole new take on 9/11 from the perspective of those in US airspace during the attack and were forced to land in a small town in Canada - Gander, Newfoundland. Over 4,000 planes landed in that town, doubling it’s population with only a couple hours notice.

On our last day we took a walk through Central Park to the MET. It was very windy and very cold. I love museums so I was very excited to experience the MET.

The MET had quite a few Monet paintings and he is one of my favorite artists so I loved seeing his work. There was also a Greek section that we got to explore and it is just unbelievable what they have recovered.

We had a little trouble getting our tour bus because another group accidentally took ours. So we ended up taking theirs which was going to a different airport so we had to reroute and all.

I had a great time learning and exploring the city with my friends!
